Dental Implants: Who Is a Candidate?

Almost anyone can get a dental implant, if they are healthy enough to have a routine procedure like an extraction. Even conditions that might seem like a hindrance can be overcome. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry in Birmingham, dental inplants are one of our specialties.

Dental implants are one of the true marvels of modern dentistry. They are titanium posts that are placed in the jaw to support an artificial tooth, or a full dental arch.

Titanium is remarkably well-suited to integrate with human bone. That’s why it’s also the material of choice for replacement joints. In the case of implants, they fuse with the bone to provide rock-solid support for the restoration.

The very best candidates are people in good health – overall health, and dental health. They should also have enough healthy bone to hold the titanium post. Even in cases where bone has receded from tooth loss can be helped, though, with a bone graft.

There are certain things that make you not well-suited for an implant. People with diabetes or heart disease, for example, are not usualy good candidates. Neither are heavy smokers, or people who have had radiation therapy to the neck or head area. These conditions can interfere with healing after the implant is placed. In situations like that, we can evaluate you on a case-by-case basis.

A common issue after tooth loss is bone recession. Even that can be overcome with a bone graft.

At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry in Birmingham, we place dental implants on a regular basis. To find out whether implants are right for you, please call our office to schedule an appointment.
